Your project

Landscaping & Driveways,
from the ground up

A driveway or hard-landscaping project needs to work below the surface as well as look right from the house. Ground preparation, finished levels, runoff and the way the space will be used influence the specification. A route used by cars has different demands from a sheltered patio or pedestrian path. Defining those uses at the beginning helps avoid selecting a finish that looks suitable in a photograph but does not fit the practical requirements of your property.

Ranshaw Group provides groundworks, hard landscaping and driveway installations across Lincolnshire. Groundworks are our core trade, and our construction capability allows outdoor work to be discussed alongside extensions, drainage or other building projects where relevant. Initial site visits and quotes are free and carry no obligation. We review the existing space, intended use, access and known drainage issues before preparing an individual quotation. No fixed installation price or standard square-metre rate has been supplied.

This service is for homeowners and other property owners planning more usable outdoor space, replacement surfaces or better vehicle access. Professional input is particularly valuable when levels need to change, water collects after rain or the new work meets a building threshold. Those interfaces can affect drainage and the overall build-up. Your priorities may include ease of maintenance, appearance, access or keeping existing features, and they should be discussed before a material choice becomes the whole design.

Before work begins

Avoid the problems
that cost twice

Replacing only the visible surface can leave an underlying problem untouched. If the ground is unsuitable, preparation is insufficient or water has no appropriate route, a new finish can still develop movement or persistent ponding. The exact build-up depends on the site and expected loading. Avoid assuming that every driveway needs the same excavation depth or that laying new paving over the old surface is suitable without assessment. The quotation should make clear what preparation and drainage work is included.

Changes in levels can move rainwater towards the house, a neighbouring property or the highway. That is not something to solve after the paving is finished. Planning requirements can also affect certain front-garden surfaces, while vehicle access changes may involve separate local authority requirements. Other common mistakes are selecting materials without considering maintenance, ignoring buried services and comparing prices that exclude removal of existing material. Deal with these decisions together so the new space does not simply conceal old constraints.

Our process

A clear route from first visit to sign-off

01

Use, access & site review

We discuss how the outdoor space is used, the number and type of vehicles where relevant, and any known water or movement problems. Show us the existing routes, thresholds and features you want to retain. The free visit identifies the information needed for the quote, including access for materials and excavation work.

02

Levels & drainage strategy

The proposed levels must relate sensibly to buildings, paths and boundaries. Surface-water arrangements should be considered before choosing the final finish. Any planning or highway requirements need checking for the specific property. A drainage solution should respond to the site rather than rely on an assumption that all ground will absorb water equally.

03

Specification & individual quote

Discuss the appropriate surface options, ground preparation and edge details before agreeing the scope. Clarify what happens to existing material and whether related steps, paths or drainage works are included. An itemised scope makes material choices meaningful because you can see the preparation and construction behind the visible finish.

04

Preparation & installation

Groundworks, the agreed build-up and the surface installation need to follow a coordinated sequence. Material suitability and manufacturer guidance matter, and access or weather may affect when certain work can take place. Retained structures and services should be considered during excavation instead of treating the garden as an empty area with no constraints.

05

Review & future care

Check the completed layout against the agreed scope and discuss the care appropriate to the selected finish. Keep product information for cleaning, maintenance and any manufacturer warranties. Our 18-month workmanship guarantee applies to the works, but no surface is promised to remain maintenance-free or unchanged under every loading and weather condition.

Built around your priorities

What a coordinated project gives you

Outdoor space that is usable

Planning the routes, parking and connections to the house together helps the finished area serve its everyday purpose. The value is a layout that fits your property and use, not an unsupported claim that a particular surface will automatically increase its sale price.

Preparation before appearance

Considering the ground and loading first gives the visible finish a sound design basis. It also makes it easier to understand why preparation is part of the quotation, rather than judging the entire project by the paving product or its colour.

Runoff considered from the start

A drainage discussion before installation helps identify where water should go and which solutions are appropriate. That is more useful than reacting to standing water after the surface is complete, when changes can mean disturbing newly finished work.

A maintainable specification

Different finishes need different care. Discussing cleaning, joints, edges and access for maintenance helps you choose an option that fits the amount of upkeep you want to manage, without promising that a driveway or patio will never need attention.

The details that matter

Methods, materials & site requirements

Choosing between surface options

Paving, slabs and other suitable finishes vary in appearance, installation detail and maintenance. Permeable construction is a complete approach, not simply a label on the top layer. Discuss which options are appropriate to the site and available within the agreed scope. We do not publish a product catalogue or claim every surfacing system is offered; material availability and suitability are confirmed as part of the project discussion.

Sub-base, edges & vehicle loading

The foundation beneath the surface and the restraint at its edges affect how it responds to use. Existing ground, excavation constraints and intended loading inform the build-up. A domestic driveway and a more heavily used access area should not be assumed to require the same specification. Buried services and nearby structures also influence preparation, so these need to be considered before an excavation approach is agreed.

Front-garden drainage & permission

In England, planning rules distinguish certain impermeable front-garden paving from permeable surfacing or runoff directed to a permeable area. Site restrictions and other requirements can still apply. Check the position for your property before installation, particularly if vehicle access to the highway changes. Surface water should not simply be redirected towards neighbouring land or the road; the design needs an appropriate, site-specific drainage route.

General guidance: GOV.UK: permeable front-garden surfacing. Requirements are checked for the individual site and proposal.

Your questions answered

Before you book landscaping & driveways

How much does landscaping & driveways cost in Lincoln?

Every project is quoted individually after we understand the site and the work required. There is no published fixed price or square-metre rate to substitute for that assessment. Access, ground conditions, existing services, specification and any necessary approvals can all change the scope. Your initial site visit and quotation are free and carry no obligation. Tell us the location, your aims and any available drawings so the discussion starts with the actual project rather than an assumed budget.

How long will the work take?

A standard completion time has not been provided. The programme depends on the agreed scope, design information, approvals, material availability, site access and any work that must happen before construction starts. We discuss these dependencies when reviewing your project, rather than promising the same timescale for every property. If you have a proposed move-in date, business opening or other deadline, mention it during the initial enquiry so its implications can be considered before you commit to a start date.

What happens at the free site visit?

The initial visit is an opportunity to explain the result you want, show us the site and identify the information needed for a meaningful quotation. Bring drawings, photographs, known constraints and details of any previous work where available. We discuss the proposed scope and the stages that may need further design or approval. A free visit is not a substitute for specialist surveys or a formal approval; where more investigation is needed, that requirement should be clear before the construction scope is finalised.

What guarantee and insurance do you provide?

Ranshaw Group provides an 18-month workmanship guarantee on all works and matches manufacturer product warranties. We hold £10,000,000 public liability insurance. A workmanship guarantee and a product warranty cover different things, so ask about the terms relevant to your chosen specification when reviewing the quotation. These are not promises of a fixed service lifespan or a replacement for routine maintenance. We do not hold trade-body accreditations and do not present membership badges or review scores that have not been supplied.

How are payments arranged?

For standard domestic projects, the payment schedule is a 10% deposit upon booking, 40% payable two weeks before the scheduled start date, 45% staged throughout the project and the final 5% upon sign-off. Commercial staged payments may be adapted for development loans or direct lender schedules. Each job is quoted individually, so review the written scope and payment stages together. Discuss any lender requirements at the outset rather than assuming they can be fitted around a construction programme after work has already been booked.

Do you cover Lincolnshire, and can you attend an emergency?

We cover Lincoln, Grantham, Boston and Sleaford, along with the other Lincolnshire locations listed on our website. Contact us with the site address so we can discuss your project. Our published hours are Monday–Saturday, 6am–6pm, and Sunday, 8am–6pm. An emergency or out-of-hours response service has not been provided, and we do not promise a response time. Call 07960 180466 to discuss availability; for an immediate danger, use the appropriate emergency service rather than waiting for a building quotation.

Will a new driveway need planning permission in Lincoln?

The answer depends on the location, surface area, drainage approach and any property restrictions. England's front-garden paving rules may require permission for certain impermeable surfaces; permeable arrangements are treated differently when the conditions are met. A dropped kerb or highway access change is a separate consideration. Check the relevant local authority requirements before construction rather than assuming permission is unnecessary because the work is outside.

How long will the driveway or paving last?

No single lifespan is promised. Ground conditions, preparation, chosen material, vehicle loading, drainage and maintenance affect how a surface performs. We provide an 18-month workmanship guarantee and match manufacturer product warranties. Discuss the care required for the finish you choose, including any cleaning or joint maintenance, and tell us about unusually heavy vehicles before the specification is agreed so use is considered from the outset.
